Filofax Location, Location, Location

Some Filofax styles and colors just seem right in certain locations. And not so right in others.

For example, my Aqua Finsbury was perfect when I lived in Indonesia. Its bright color looked great by the pool, and I like how it looks with my Filofax Finchley bag and my water bottle that I carried with me every day.

While I was living in Indonesia, I received my Orchid Aston as a very generous birthday gift from my dad. As much as I loved the muted mauve color, it just didn't seem to "go" with Indonesia's hot tropical climate.

But now that I'm back in Scotland, it's absolutely perfect. In fact, I don't normally name my Filofaxes but I call this one Heather because it's the exact color of the heather in bloom on the hillsides here, and in our back yard.

Do you feel certain Filofax colors and styles "go" best where you are and others don't? Or do you do the opposite and, for example, use tropical styles and colors when you're in the dark depths of snowy winter?

  1. I totally agree, Laurie. I currently have 3 FFs (2 brown and 1 green) and, while I love them, I find myself craving colour now that summer is here so I have ordered a Fluro Pink Original. However, I'm going to Scotland in July and I'm definitely taking my green Original with me. Somehow 'Scotland' and 'Fluoro Pink' just don't work together in my head.

  3. And some Filos never seem to fit in... anywhere : have you ever seen anyone with an Enigma ? I have only found them once "in real life" but never found pictures of the binder actually in use by someone, strange, huh ?

(Not to be too hard on this model, I have to admit it felt nice in my hand, but the pattern was really weird, especially in red; perhaps in Brindle it's more... "discreet" ?)

  4. I know exactly what you mean - all during the school year I carried around a Magenta Adelphi. It was perfectly situated next to my other school supplies and a casual bag with jeans. However, this summer I have an internship at an office where everyone comes in suits and carries a briefcase or a work bag. I have switched to a less eye-catching Cuban in chilli and it seems much more professional. It's not exactly switching continents, but I do agree that environment can change everything!

  6. I think that both "time" and "place" can affect which FF goes best. Right now, I only have 2 Filofaxes, my everyday personal Finsbury and a mini Portabello I use as a wallet. But my dream is to have at least 4 personal-sized binders that I would change with the seasons! I'd have 2 bright colored ones for spring and summer, and 2 darker colors for fall and winter. In addition to my Raspberry Finsbury, my wish list is an aqua Malden, ochre Malden, and wine Holborn. (But I wouldn't limit myself to switching binders with the seasons... I'd probably switch around more often! ;) )

  7. Interesting. I hadn't thought about place as much as season. Probably because I've always lived in one place. How boring that sounds! Anyway, as fun as it would be to use a bright, bold color in winter to liven things up, I find that I tend to use my blue, teal, turquoise binders in the spring/summer and my darker colors in winter. I use my purple Finchley in fall or winter. I like to use my chestnut Cuban in the fall. My mushroom Aston I used in the early spring. I also like to use it if I am carrying a white or off white satchel. If I had the coveted Ochre Malden I would probably use it in the fall. I also have 3 grey Maldens and as much as I like them I can't bring myself to use them in the spring/summer. But I do have a black pocket Chameleon that I use as a wallet currently so black is an exception where I have no problem using that year round. I would like to get an Original in that bright orange because that is the color nail polish I use in the summer or when I go to Florida or somewhere tropic. Yes, that sounds weird, haha. So I would probably only use the orange in the summer. However, I may rethink this because why not use hot pink or bright blue in the dead of a Michigan winter to liven things up???!!! By the way, I love the teal Finsbury (lucky you!) and the Aston does look gorgeous with all that Scottish heather! Brilliant choices!

  8. I only have 2 filofaxes so far and they're bright blue and teal. I bought them in the bright colors since I was getting tired of everything being black. For travels and trips I think I might need to get a non-leather filo, possibly a domino or another of the cheaper ones. Since we frequently travel to the French riviera I belive I'd be happiest with a bold, bright summer color. Possibly azur or maybe they could make a filofax in coral. We need more bright colors. Let's have the calipso colors in non-leather versions or the calipso in personal!! =)

  9. I suppose my grey Malden is perfect for grey Wellington, then!
